3 Simple Steps to Better Feeling Thoughts

Worry, stress, and fear often dominate our thinking. These thoughts come up no matter how unwelcome they may be. No matter how hard we try to push these thoughts away, they insist on tormenting us.

How do we get rid of these unwanted thoughts? How can we let go of this disturbing mind chatter?

Here are three simple steps to start making changes and take control of your thinking:

  1. Acknowledge that the thought you’re thinking is making you feel bad.
  2. Choose to think a better feeling thought:  an enjoyable memory, an activity that you are looking forward to, an outcome or result you would like to have happen, or any other thought that makes you feel good.
  3. Implement the new feel good thought. Do not try to eliminate the bad feeling thought; this will make you focus on it even more. The key is to replace the old bad feeling thought with the new good feeling thought.

Every time the bad feeling thought comes into your mind, acknowledge it and say, “I choose to think a better feeling thought now.” Now repeat the better feeling thought in your mind or out loud. Put your focus on this new thought; notice how this new thought makes you feel. Enjoy thinking this new positive thought.

Be loving and patient with yourself; it takes time to make changes, but keep working on it. You can do it!

What you focus on will grow bigger in your life, so focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. Focus your mind on empowering positive thoughts instead of negative unhealthy thoughts.”

The Story Behind the Cover Photo:

A bird feeder and a little nyjer seed attracted this American Goldfinch to my backyard. These little birds are active, quick, and only 4.3 to 5.1 inches (11-13 cm) in length; it took a tripod and plenty of patience to photograph his beauty. The purple and green background is the blur of trees in the distance.

To create the book cover, I added banners and words to the photograph in Photoshop Elements.

Finding Peace

In this busy fast paced world, sometimes the last thing around seems to be any sort of peace. Try this very short exercise taken from: Love Yourself Being You: A Way to Live Your Best Life to get yourself grounded, calm, and to find inner peace:

“Using your five senses, observe something in nature:

  • touch – feel your bare feet on the ground, feel a breeze caressing you
  • see – the birds soaring in the sky, the deep rich colours of the trees and the flowers
  • taste – sweet juicy pineapple, fresh strawberries
  • smell – the fresh air, the flowers
  • hear – the birds singing; the sound of the ocean, a waterfall, or a stream; the booming thunder

Why this works?

In order to do this exercise, you must stop in order to observe; you must stop and be present in the here and now.  This is where peace is, in the beauty of the present moment, the only moment in which we truly exist.”
