A visit from the praying mantis is believed by some to be good luck or a divine messenger. The praying mantis is a symbol of meditation, representing stillness, quieting the mind, patience, awareness, and calm.

The praying mantis is named for the prayer like position it appears to be in when the front legs are bent and held together at an angle.
